Trekking along trails, biking across forests, exploring enchanting villages full of cultural relics or flying over incredible alpine meadows are only a few ways of discovering natural beauty of this quaint region. Połonina Wetlińska, Połonina Caryńska along with Mt. Tarnica are the most outstanding landmarks of the Bieszczady Mountains and offer spectacular views that make them more and more popular not only throughout the country but also outside its borders.The Polish-Slovak-Ukrainian borderland was visited by about 2.5 million tourists in 2016.

What follows are some of the most scenic places in the Bieszczady Mountains you must experience at least once in your life. The most iconic hiking trails

Mt. Tarnica, Połonina Wetlińska and Połonina Caryńska offer all the things that make them the unparalleled places to be enjoyed. Polonynas – are typical only for upper zone of the Eastern Beskids. These alpine and subalpine meadows distinguish the Bieszczady Mountains from any other landforms in Poland.
This paradise for hikers offers numerous hiking trails, from long-distance footpaths to shorter ones, which differ from each other in terms of the level of difficulty; each of which is marked with paint by corresponding colour. The most popular and scenic trails lead up to the peak of Mt Tarnica, blazed with blue paint markings, and to Połonina Wetlińska, blazed with yellow paint markings and starting at the Wyżna Pass. Note that the colours indicate approved difficulty level! Tarnica Mountain: Wołosate → the cross at Mt Tarnica summit → Wołosate

Mt. Tarnica is the highest peak in the Polish Bieszczady Mountains. Its height is 1,346 metres above main sea level and is one of the Polish Crown Peaks, numbering 28 highest peaks in Poland. [5]The mountain’s summit is covered with a stone run and is marked with an 8.5 metres long steel cross, commemorating Karol Wojtyła’s visit to this place in 1953 (many years before the priest was elected Pope John Paul II). A geodetic point can be also found at the summit. The peak of Mt Tarnica is one of the most amazing viewpoints in the Bieszczady Mountains and is definitely a sight to behold. .

Trail description:

  • Begin your walk at a car park in the village of Wołosate.
  • Turn right and continue along the blue trail, which
    leads up to the peak of Mt. Tarnica.
  • After approx. several hundred meters you will reach the Information/ Entrance point
    of the Bieszczadzki National Park
    where you will be asked to purchase an entrance ticket:
    PLN 7 for an adult ticket per person or PLN 3,50 for a half-price ticket per person.
  • Then the trail heads up for an old cemetery (there used to be an Eastern Orthodox church as well), bends awhile before
    that burial ground
  • and interconnects with the Orlika Krzykliwego nature path; they both lead up to
    the summit. From there a walk will take you along the scenic valleys as well as lovely glades
    and further on, you will enter the forest where, almost immediately, you will come across steep stairs
    weaving upwards through the trees up to the other edge of the forest.
    Although this challenging section of the trail may make you huffing and puffing, it is worth the effort as outside the forest you will be graced with a captivating panorama
    of the ridge of Mt Tarnica
    .
  • As you continue your hike, you will walk round Mt Tarnica’s second and slightly lower ridge
    and then through the pass below Mt Tarnica. After an approx. 20 minute ascend,
    you will finally summit Mt Tarnica and be rewarded with incredible views
    of the highest peak in the Bieszczady Mountains- Mt Pikuj, standing on the Ukrainian side
    .

Połonina Wetlińska: Wetlina → the Orłowicza Pass → Połonina Wetlińska → the BdPN Tourist Shelter at Połonina Wetlinska → Brzegi Górne

Połonina Wetlińska (1,255 metres above main sea level) is a mountain massif in the Western Bieszczady Mountains. It is a unique place due to temperature inversion Połonina Wetlińska is a perfect viewpoint – in winter, Połonina Wetlińska offers otherworldly views of the remote, 200 km away or so, Tatry peaks rising high above the billows of clouds. It features a legendary mountain hostel, currently run by the Bieszczadzki National Park. The building used to be a military observatory point. After some time, it was refurbished to make it a hostel providing basic accommodation for hikers and was named Chatka Puchatka(English: ‘the House at Pooh Corner’). Although it was officially renamed to ‘Schron Turystyczny BdPN’ (English: the BdPN Tourist Shelter) in 2015, the former name has been still widely used. The hostel is the highest-altitude shelter in the Bieszczady Mountains.

Trail description:

  • Start your walk at Stare Sioło in the village of Wetlina and head for
    the entrance point of the Bieszczadzki National Park. The entrance is marked with an information board.This first section of the trail offers scenic views of
    Mt. Hnatowe Berdo.
  • and just from the entrance point, it Climbs gradually up to the Orłowicza Pass.
    As you keep walking along the trail, you will enjoy magical landscapes of
    Mt. Smerek (1,222 metres a.m.s.l.) which is the most remote peak in the Western Polonynas.
  • Your ascent will take you to the main trail junction at the Orłowicza Pass (1,075 metres a.m.s.l.)
    with trails
  • leading up to the main range of Połonina Wetlińska, including
    Mt Osadzki Wierch and Mt. Roh - considered as the southern and northern points of the Połonina Wetlińska range.
    Moreover, Mt Roh, currently closed for tourists, is the highest peak of the Western Bieszczady Mountains.
  • At this point, choose the path leading towards the BdPN Tourist Shelter
    located in the Eastern Połonina Wetlińska.
    This truly interesting path runs steeply down to a scenic saddle-shaped pass
    and finally upwards onto the BdPN Tourist Shelter, which offers a cosy atmosphere.
  • After celebrating a sheer feeling of accomplishment at the ‘Chatka Puchatka’ hostel, follow the red trail leading to the village of Brzegi Górne.
